Community project of the Marine Heat Flow Working Group (IHFC 2023-2027)
The working group « Marine heat flow » of the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC) has been launched in 2023. The community project of this working group aims to encourage discussion and strengthen communication in the marine heat flow community. This includes all actors of the marine heat flow community (scientists, engineers, companies) and all discussion related to marine data acquisition (cruise planning, instrumentation, data processing, etc.) and data review and interpretation.

Three decades of temperature logging and heat flow determination in Velten [Germany]
Since 1990, the geothermal exploration borehole Gt Velten 2/90 wasrepeatedly logged by GFZ researchers. Several high-precission temperature logs are available, used combined with lab measurements of thermal conductivity on drill cores and estimations from well logs to derive the site heat flow value.

The purpose of this project is the thermal characterization of the Tournemire Underground Research Lab (URL), located in Southern France. This includes in-situ thermal heating experiments, in-situ logging and laboratory test of thermal rock properties. Finally, heat flow is calculated and evaluated.

Heat Flow survey in the Ross Sea, Antarctica
This study aims to: Quantify the spatial distribution of heat flow in the Terror Rift System through direct marine measurements. Compare observed values with global analogues to infer the tectonic and magmatic state of the rift. Identify and correct for environmental and geological influences such as past ice sheet dynamics, sedimentation rates, and fluid flow that may bias heat flow observations. Integrate marine data with onshore records and geophysical models to refine the regional thermal framework. Contribute to broader geodynamic, geothermal, and climatic models by improving our understanding of heat transport processes beneath West Antarctica.
