Heat flow and thermal structure in the Koyna seismic zone, western India: Implications for recurrent reservoir triggered seismicity

Deepjyoti Goswami, Vyasulu V. Akkiraju, Sukanta Roy

Scientific core drilling to a depth of 1522 m in the Koyna seismic zone, western India, provides a rare opportunity to characterize the geothermal regime and study its implications on seismogenesis. The borehole KBH-1 penetrated the 932.5 m thick Deccan Trap and continued for 589.5 m in the granite-gneiss basement. The equilibrium temperature profile was obtained from measurements made 10 months after drilling. Thermal conductivity was measured on core samples of Deccan basalt and basement granitoids. Radiogenic heat production of the basement granitoids was estimated from U, Th and K analyses. Salient results are as follows. (i) The temperature gradients …

Heat flow of the Mozambique channel: New data and predicted surface heat flow map

Eloïse Bessière, Jeffrey Poort, Tristan Cornu, Sylvie Leroy

The Mozambique Channel, a complex domain composed of passive margins and oceanic crust affected by younger strike-slip and volcanic activity, is still poorly studied for surface heat flow. We present 33 new marine-type heat flow estimations acquired offshore in 2014–2015 during the MOZ cruises, completed with 4 new heat flow values derived from reappraised old well sites (PAMELA project). Offshore heat flow is generally low to normal and does not display strong variations. As poor data coverage persists in large parts of the area, we performed a heat flow prediction mapping using the similarity method. Based on an extrapolation of …

Hydrothermal Seepage of Altered Crustal Formation Water Seaward of the Middle America Trench, Offshore Costa Rica

Patrice K. F. Parsons, C. Geoffrey Wheat, Andrew T. Fisher, Eli A. Silver, Michael Hutnak

Abstract Chemical compositions of sediment pore waters are presented from 13 piston and gravity cores that were collected on ∼24 Ma crust of the Cocos Plate seaward of the Middle America Trench and near the onset of crustal faulting from subduction. Cores were collected mainly within a 1.75 km2 area overlying a buried basement topographic high that supports an elevated heat flux, consistent with seawater transport within the upper volcanic crust. Systematic variations in pore water chemical profiles indicate upward seepage speeds (up to 1.7 cm yr−1 providing a net flux of 0.1 L s−1), constrain the chemical composition of …

Heterogeneities of the lithospheric thermal structure and rheology control Cenozoic intracontinental deformation in southeast China

Peng Yang, Shaowen Liu

It still remains elusive how the rheology of the lithosphere influences intracontinental deformation. We constructed a thermo-rheological model of the lithosphere in southeast China, a typical intracontinental deformation area, to address this issue. The thermal model was derived from updated heat flow data assuming steady-state heat conduction, using xenoliths and Pn seismic velocity data as constraints. This thermal model was integrated with a compositional and structural model of the lithosphere to estimate the strength distribution. Remarkable heterogeneities in the thermo-rheological structure were obtained. Most of southeast China is characterized by a large mantle heat flow and high temperature, thin and …

Thermal Conductivity of Rocks and Estimates of Heat Flow in the Lena–Anabar Interfluve (Siberian Platform)

A.D. Duchkov, D.E. Ayunov, P.A. Yan, A.I. Sivtsev, L.S. Sokolova

––We present results of measurements of the physical properties (thermal conductivity, porosity, permeability, and density) of 65 air-dry sedimentary-rock samples from the cores of six deep wells drilled in the Lena–Anabar interfluve. The rocks are compact low-porosity, almost impermeable siltstones, sandstones, and dolomites mainly of Paleozoic and Precambrian ages. Correlations of thermal conductivity with porosity and bulk density have been established. The available information about the thermal conductivity of rocks as well as the production thermograms recorded after drilling made it possible to estimate the geothermal gradient and heat flow (q) for the Ust’-Olenekskaya-2370, Charchykskaya-1, Khastakhskaya-930, and D’yappal’skaya-1 wells. The …

On the intriguing subject of the low amplitudes of magnetic anomalies at the Powell Basin

M. Catalán, R. Negrete-Aranda, Y. M. Martos, F. Neumann, A. Santamaría, K. Fuentes

The Powell Basin is a small oceanic basin bounded by continental blocks that fragmented during break up of Antarctica from South America. This basin bounds the South Orkney Microcontinent to the east, the South Scotia Ridge to the north, and the Antarctic Peninsula to the west. The timing of its opening is poorly constrained due to the low amplitude of the oceanic spreading magnetic anomalies which hampers their identification and interpretation causing large uncertainties in proposed ages that range from the Late Eocene to Early Miocene. This basin has been extensively studied using a variety of geophysical methods including seismic, …

A high geothermal setting in the Linyi geothermal field: Evidence from the lithospheric thermal structure

Yuzhong Liao, Wei Zhang, Yuwei Rong, Feng Liu, Shuaichao Wei, Long Li, Zirui Zhao, Man Li

The lithospheric thermal structure has a profound indicative significance for the potential evaluation and exploration of geothermal resources. The Linyi geothermal field, located in the southern section of the Yishu fault in Shandong Province, boasts abundant geothermal resources. However, its origin is still unclear. This study analyzed the characteristics of terrestrial heat flow using the temperature logging of geothermal wells and measurements of thermal conductivity and heat production. Combined with the geophysical information of the Xiangshui (Jiangsu Province)-Mandula (Nei Mongol) geoscience transect and the lithology revealed by the geothermal wells, this study built a conceptual model of the lithospheric thermal …

Geothermal heat flux is the dominant source of uncertainty in englacial-temperature-based dating of ice rise formation

A. Montelli, J. Kingslake

Ice rises are areas of locally grounded, slow-moving ice adjacent to floating ice shelves. Temperature profiles measured through ice rises contain information regarding changes to their dynamic evolution and external forcings, such as past surface temperatures, past accumulation rates and geothermal heat flux. While previous work has used borehole temperature–depth measurements to infer one or two such parameters, there has been no systematic investigation of parameter sensitivity to the interplay of multiple external forcings and dynamic changes. A one-dimensional vertical heat flow forward model developed here examines how changing forcings affect temperature profiles. Further, using both synthetic data and previous …

Update and Review of Continental Conductive Surface Heat Flow Measurements in México: An Analysis of Deep Boreholes

O. M. Espinoza-Ojeda, R. M. Prol-Ledesma, J. A. Muñiz-Jauregui

Conductive heat flow is an important parameter that is used to explain, directly or indirectly, several geological, geophysical and geochemical processes in the Earth´s interior. It is also one of the main input parameters for reliable estimations of resources related with geothermal and petroleum systems. That is because heat flow is used to describe subsurface temperature profiles and heat transfer mechanisms, thereby enabling the establishment of heat storage reserves in the case of geothermal systems and conditions of thermal maturation of organic matter in petroleum genesis. Since 2014, collection of data to estimate new continental conductive heat flow values in …

New Maps of Conductive Heat Flow in the Great Basin, USA: Separating Conductive and Convective Influences

Jacob DeAngelo, Erick R. Burns, Emilie Gentry, Joseph F. Batir, Cary R. Lindsey, Stanley P. Mordensky

Geothermal well data from Southern Methodist University and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) were used to create maps of estimated background conductive heat flow across the Great Basin region of the western United States. These heat flow maps were generated as part of the USGS hydrothermal and Enhanced Geothermal Systems resource assessment process, and the creation process seeks to remove the influence of hydrothermal convection from the predictions of the background conductive heat flow. The heat flow maps were constructed using a custom-developed iterative process using weighted regression, in which convectively influenced outliers were deemphasized by assigning lower weights to …

Heat flow and thermal regime in the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California: Estimates of conductive and advective heat transport

Florian Neumann, Raquel Negrete-Aranda, Robert N. Harris, Juan Contreras, Christophe Y. Galerne, Manet S. Peña-Salinas, Ronald M. Spelz, Andreas Teske, Daniel Lizarralde, Tobias W. Höfig, Expedition 385 Scientists

Abstract Heat flow is estimated at eight sites drilled int the Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California, during the International Ocean Discovery Program Expedition 385. The expedition sought to understand the thermal regime of the basin and heat transfer between off-axis sills intruding the organic-rich sediments of the Guaymas Basin, and the basin floor. The distinct sedimentation rates, active tectonics, and magmatism make the basin interesting for scientific discoveries. Results show that sedimentation corrected heat flow values range 119–221 mW/m2 in the basin and 257–1003 mW/m2 at the site of a young sill intrusion, denominated Ringvent. Thermal analysis shows that heat …

High Heat Flow Anomaly Within the St Paul Fracture Zone: Heat Advection and/or Inherent Thermal Structure?

Emma P. M. Gregory, Heinrich Villinger, Satish C. Singh, Norbert Kaul

Abstract Heat flow across oceanic transform faults (TFs) and fracture zones (FZs) has rarely been studied in detail, despite these features representing distinct thermal boundaries within the oceanic lithosphere. Here, we present heat flow measurements across the St Paul fracture zone (SPFZ) in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean, from 48 Ma crust in the south to 71 Ma in the north. To the north of the FZ we find a basal heat flow of 63 mWm−2, and to the south a basal heat flow of 79 mWm−2, both in agreement with plate cooling models. However, within the SPFZ we find a …

Shallow geothermal heat in Western Canada: climatic warming impact changes with time– depth

Jacek Majorowicz, Jan Šafanda

<p>Gain of heat and temperature in the shallow subsurface over the last decades/century has been impacted by the industrial period climatic surface air temperature (SAT) increase. Detailed study of the available temperature-depth data based on 43 wells with single and repeated temperature logs done by the first author has been combined with data base information (Jessop et al 2005) to create temperature maps at depth. Based on these 43 logs it is shown that the heat flux increases with depth in most cases for the available depth data range from surface to some 200m. Model of heat flow versus depth based …

Terrestrial heat flow and subsidence of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea

Paolo Chiozzi, Elie El Jbeily, Roberta Ivaldi, Massimo Verdoya

We analysed the bathymetry and both marine and continental heat-flow data of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea basins. Bathymetry was corrected for the subsidence caused by sediment deposition to obtain the water-loaded seafloor depth. The thermal measurements were critically reviewed and corrected for sedimentation by 1–13 mW m−2 and for climatic changes by 4–5 mW m−2 to infer the purely conductive terrestrial heat flow. The seafloor depths and thermal data of the Ionian, Herodotus and Levantine basins were compared to reference models of continental lithosphere stretching and ocean plate cooling. In the Levantine Basin, the seafloor depth of 5.0 km argues …

Distribution of surface heat flow and effects on the subsurface temperatures in the northern part of Thrace Basin, NW Turkey

Kamil Erkan, Elif Balkan-Pazvantoğlu

The Thrace Basin in northwestern Turkey is a deep Eocene–Oligocene hydrocarbon-bearing sedimentary basin. The basin has potential for geothermal energy utilization in the future due to its favorable geological conditions. In this study, we combined the available bottom hole temperature (BHT) data from 70 points with the thermal conductivity and radiogenic heat productions of the basin formations, and generated a detailed thermal model of the northern part of the basin. For heat flow determinations from the BHT data, we applied Bullard’s thermal resistance method on formation thermal conductivities and thicknesses. The results give an average surface heat flow of 65.8 …

Prediction of Terrestrial Heat Flow in Songliao Basin Based on Deep Neural Network

Lige Bai, Jing Li, Zhaofa Zeng, Deqiang Tao

Abstract Heat flow is a geothermal parameter for indicating the heat source distribution and evaluating geothermal reservoirs. Only 1,230 heat flow points are distributed unevenly in China, mainly concentrated in high-temperature geothermal and southeast regions. The Songliao Basin is a potential geothermal field in China. Still, only 20 measurement points are known, making evaluating the geothermal genetic mechanism difficult. Sparse data interpolation using deep learning methods is highly accurate and widely used in fields such as image processing. In this work, we propose a deep neural network for predicting heat flow in the Songliao Basin. More than 4,000 global heat …
