Hydrothermal circulation within the Endeavour Segment, Juan de Fuca Ridge

Paul H. Johnson, Maurice A. Tivey, Tor A. Bjorklund, Marie S. Salmi

Areas of the seafloor at mid-ocean ridges where hydrothermal vents discharge are easily recognized by the dramatic biological, physical, and chemical processes that characterize such sites. Locations where seawater flows into the seafloor to recharge hydrothermal cells within the crustal reservoir are by contrast almost invisible but can be indirectly identified by a systematic grid of conductive heat flow measurements. An array of conductive heat flow stations in the Endeavour axial valley of the Juan de Fuca Ridge has identified recharge zones that appear to represent a nested system of fluid circulation paths. At the scale of an axial rift …

Heat-flow and hydrothermal circulation at the ocean-continent transition of the eastern gulf of Aden

Francis Lucazeau, Sylvie Leroy, Frédérique Rolandone, Elia d'Acremont, Louise Watremez, Alain Bonneville, Bruno Goutorbe, Doga Dusunur

In order to investigate the importance of fluid circulation associated with the formation of ocean-continent transitions (OCT), we examine 162 new heat-flow (HF) measurements in the eastern Gulf of Aden, obtained at close locations along eight seismic profiles and with multi-beam bathymetry. The average HF values in the OCT and in the oceanic domain (similar to 18 m.y.) are very close to the predictions of cooling models, showing that the overall importance of fluids remains small at the present time compared to oceanic ridge flanks of the same age. However, local HF anomalies are observed, although not systematically, in the …

Low heat flux and large variations of lithospheric thickness in the Canadian Shield

F. Levy, Claude Jaupart, Jean-Claude Mareschal, Gerard Bienfait, A. Limare

Ten new heat flux determinations have been made using measurements in 22 mining exploration boreholes located at latitudes higher than 51 degrees N in the Canadian Shield. They provide data in poorly sampled regions near the core of the North American craton where one expects the lithosphere to be thickest. The new heat flux values are all smaller than 34 mW m(-2) and are among the lowest recorded so far in the shield. For all the new sites, there is no relationship between heat flux and heat production in surface rocks. In the Canadian Shield, heat flux variations occur at …

Thermal regime of the Costa Rican convergent margin: 1. Along-strike variations in heat flow from probe measurements and estimated from bottom-simulating reflectors

Robert N. Harris, Ingo Grevemeyer, Cesar R. Ranero, Heinrich W. Villinger, U. Barckhausen, T. Henke, C. Mueller, S. Neben

The thermal structure of convergent margins provides information related to the tectonics, geodynamics, metamorphism, and fluid flow of active plate boundaries. We report 176 heat flow measurements made with a violin bow style probe across the Costa Rican margin at the Middle America Trench. The probe measurements are collocated with seismic reflection lines. These seismic reflection lines show widespread distribution of bottom-simulating reflectors (BSRs). To extend the spatial coverage of heat flow measurements we estimate heat flow from the depth of BSRs. Comparisons between probe measurements and BSR-derived estimates of heat flow are generally within 10% and improve with distance …

Heat flow interpretations for the Australian continent: Release 1

Alison L. Kirkby, Edward Gerner

Current understanding of Australia's geothermal resources is based on limited data such as temperature measurements taken in petroleum and mineral boreholes across the country. Heat flow studies are rarer, with existing publicly available compilations containing less than 150 heat flow data-points for Australia. Both temperature and heat flow data are unevenly distributed and, where no data exist, the available information has been interpolated over large areas to generate national-scale maps. Geoscience Australia has acquired the field and laboratory equipment required to measure heat flow. It began thermal logging of boreholes across Australia in late 2008 and has since collected 155 …

Low heat flow in the Atlas Mountains and the implications for the origin of the uplift

Jeffrey Poort, Abdelkrim Rimi, Francis Lucazeau, Ahmed Maliki, Hélène Bouquerel

The Atlas Mountains in NE Africa form a large topographic high between the Western Mediterranean and the Sahara Platform. The uplift in the High and Middle Atlas only started in the Eocene as a result of transferred effects of the Africa-Eurasia plate convergence (Alpine-Himalayan orogeny), while the Anti-Atlas has a longer history and formed on the edge of the West African Craton. Because crustal thickness in some parts of the Atlas is apparently insufficient to isostatically compensate for the present-day topography, there is still a lot of uncertainty on the relative importance of tectonic versus thermal origin of the uplift. …

Rock thermal conductivity of Mesozoic geothermal aquifers in the Northeast German Basin

Sven Fuchs, Andrea Foerster

This study reports laboratory-measured thermal-conductivity values of Mesozoic sandstones from eight wells (predominantly geothermal boreholes) of the Northeast German Basin (NEGB). The measurements were made on drill core using the optical scanning method. Bulk thermal conductivities of sandstones corrected for in situ thermal conditions range between 2.1 and 3.9 W/m/K. In general, the Mesozoic sandstones show a large effective porosity typically ranging between 16% and 30%. Matrix thermal conductivity ranges from 3.4 to 7.4 W/m/K. The higher values reflect the large quartz content in sandstone. Based on the in situ thermal conductivity and corresponding interval temperature gradient, obtained from high-precision …

New heat flow measurements in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea (Sea of Japan): relationship to local BSR depth, and implications for regional heat flow distribution

Young-Gyun Kim, Sang-Mook Lee, Osamu Matsubayashi

In July 2007, new marine heat flow data were collected at ten sites (HF01-10) in the central and southwestern sectors of the Ulleung Basin (East Sea or Sea of Japan) as part of regional gas hydrate research. In addition, cores were collected at five of these sites for laboratory analysis. The results show that the geothermal gradient ranged from 103-137 mK/m, and the in-situ thermal conductivity from 0.82-0.95 W/m center dot K. Laboratory measurements of thermal conductivity were found to deviate by as much as 40% from the in-situ measurements, despite the precautions taken to preserve the cores. Based on …

Estimation of heat flow in Tuva from data on helium isotopes in thermal mineral springs

A.D. Duchkov, K.M. Rychkova, V.I. Lebedev, I.L. Kamenskii, L.S. Sokolova

Concentrations of helium isotopes were measured in gas and water samples from 28 thermal mineral springs in Tuva and adjacent regions of Buryatia and Gorny Altai. It is shown that fluids from 16 springs are rich in mantle helium (4–35%). With regard to the air contamination of the samples, the corrected ratios of helium isotopes (Rcor = 3He/4He) in these springs vary from 5.3 × 10–8 to 422 × 10–8. Using these Rcor values, we estimated the heat flow; these estimates were then applied to calculate the deep-level temperatures and thickness of thermal lithosphere. According to these parameters, the Tuva …

Ground surface temperature history in southern Canada: Temperatures at the base of the Laurentide ice sheet and during the Holocene

C. Chouinard, Jean-Claude Mareschal

We use temperature profiles from 7 deep (approximate to 2000 m) boreholes located in southern Canada to infer ground surface temperature histories (GSTH) during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and the Holocene. Visual inspection of the heat flow and of the reduced temperature depth profiles reveals significant regional differences with some sites showing conspicuous signs of post glacial warming, and other indicating only very small changes in ground surface temperature. These differences are confirmed by the inversions of the temperature profiles. The most prominent variations in GST are found at the Sudbury. Ontario, sites where the present ground surface temperature …

Present‐Day Geothermal Regime in Tarim Basin, Northwest China

Chang-Ge Feng, Shao-Wen Liu, Liang-Shu Wang, Cheng Li

Geothermal gradient and terrestrial heat flow are key parameters that describe the thermal regime of sedimentary basin, and are so vital for understanding the tectono-thermal evolution and associated hydrocarbon resource potential assessment of oil and gas bearing basin. Here we show the distribution pattern of the updated present-day geothermal gradient and calculate 38 terrestrial heat flow values in the Tarim basin, one of the biggest sedimentary basins in China, based on the formation temperature data from approximately 470 wells and 941 thermal conductivity of rocks within this basin. Our results show that the present-day geothermal gradient of Tarim basin varies …
