Abnormally low heat flow in Southeast China resulted from remnant slab subducted beneath the east Asian lithosphere

Abstract Subducted remnant slabs play an important role in the geodynamics and evolution of the Earth, but their behaviour in the mantle is not well understood. Terrestrial heat flow and thermal lithosphere structure provide crucial constraints on lithospheric dynamics. Based on whole-well steady-state temperature logs and conductivity measurements of core samples from a scientific borehole, we obtained a new high-quality terrestrial heat flow values for East Asia. The heat flow was calculated at 60.6 ± 16.0 mW/m2 with a high crust/mantle heat flow ratio of 1.41, suggesting a hot-crust-cold-mantle lithospheric structure. Geothermal gradient and heat flow of the Erlian Basin and adjacent areas, Northern China: Geodynamic implication

The Erlian Basin, located in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) between North China and the Siberian cratons, is a Mesozoic basin developed on a fold basement. A good understanding of the thermal regime in this area allows for greater insight into the geodynamic processes of the CAOB. In this study, geothermal gradient and heat flow of the Erlian Basin were assessed using temperature logs from 14 boreholes and rock thermal conductivity data. The results show that the geothermal gradients of the Erlian Basin range from 29.6 ℃/km to 51.4 ℃/km with an average of 39.1 ± 5.4 ℃/km. …

Transport of Heat by Hydrothermal Circulation in a Young Rift Setting: Observations From the Auka and JaichMaa Ja'ag' Vent Field in the Pescadero Basin, Southern Gulf of California

Abstract Heat flow measurements collected throughout the Auka and JaichMaa Ja'ag' hydrothermal vent fields in the central graben of the Southern Pescadero Basin, southern Gulf of California, indicate upflow of hydrothermal fluids associated with rifting dissipate heat in excess of 10 W/m2 around faults that have a few kilometers in length. Paradoxically, longer faults do not show signs of venting. Heat flow anomalies slowly decay to background values of ∼2 W/m2 at distances of ∼1 km from these faults following an inverse square-root distance law. In western and southwestern Anatolia, the geothermal gradient cannot be accurately measured in many wells due to the complex horizontal water cycle. The aim of this study is to calculate the geothermal gradients by using a new approach for such wells. Present Heat Flow and Paleo-Geothermal Anomalies in the Southern Golan Heights, Israel

Abstract While present heat flow (HF) throughout Israel and the Dead Sea Transform (DST) area is considered low, a thermal anomaly exists near the Yarmuk valley at the southern tip of the Golan Heights. New temperature measurements in the southern Golan Heights show that the distribution of the thermal anomaly is significantly wider than previously thought. The new data conforms to either a local and shallow magmatic chamber, which is in thermal steady state with the surrounding rocks, or to a transient heat front associated with localized Pleistocene magmatic intrusions in the Yarmuk.
