The Geothermal Study of the Mid-Segment of the Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Zone and Its Neighboring Region

Zu Jin-Hua, Wu Qianfan, Lian Yu-Fang

In the paper, there are 25 new terrestrial heat flows of the mid-segment of the TanchengLujiang fault zone to be listed. With these geothermal data and other 37 terrestrial heat flows (published), we describe the distribution features of terrestrial heat flows in the area. In this research, we inferred the two-dimension temperature structure from surface to lithospheric bottom of the Huaibei-Sixian-Jinhu profile with the finite-element method and calculated the boundary temperature and heat flow of sedimentary, granite and basalt.

Heat flow in the Alboran Sea, western Mediterranean

Boris G. Polyak, M. Fernandez, M.D. Khutorskoy, J.I. Soto, I.A. Basov, M.C. Comas, V.Y. Khain, Belén Alonso, G.V. Agapova, I.S. Mazurova, A. Negredo, V.O. Tochitsky, J. delaLinde, N.A. Bogdanov, E. Banda

The results of the first regional heat flow survey carried out in the Alboran Basin are presented. The survey consists of 98 heat flow measurements obtained using a violin type probe, 697 nautic miles of gravity profiles, 1446 nautic miles of bathymetric survey, and 22 gravity cores. A remarkable difference in heat flow patterns exists between the western (WAB) and eastern (EAB) parts of the Alboran Basin. The average heat flow in the WAB is 69 +/- 6 mW m(-2) with a generally increasing trend towards the centre and to the east. In contrast, the heat flow pattern in the …

Heat flow in Albania

Vladimir Cermak, Milan Kresl, L. Kucerova, Jan Safanda, A. Frasheri, N. Kapedani, R. Lico, D. Cano

As part of a joint geothermal project between Albania and the Czech Republic, a field expedition was organized to Albania in summer 1993 to measure temperature profiles in selected boreholes and to collect rock samples to determine their thermal conductivity. Fourteen localities were visited and nine detailed temperature-versus-depth profiles were obtained. These results were completed with numerous industrial temperature records from other deep holes. The regional patterns of temperatures at 100 m depth and of characteristic near-surface temperature gradients were constructed, and the effect of the topography on the subsurface temperature field was assessed to calculate a total of 49 …

Heat flow map of South America

Valiya M. Hamza, Miguel Munoz

The results of geothermal investigations carried out in South America have been compiled with the purpose of preparing regional maps of terrestrial heat flow. The compilation revealed that 655 heat flow values had been determined, giving an overall data density of 37106 km2 and a representative mean heat flow of 63+-36 mW/m2. The quality of the data set is variable, depending on the nature of the primary geothermal data, and the geographic distribution of the data set is also non-uniform. In spite of such difficulties a careful analysis of the data set, following suitable priority schemes, has allowed not only …

Heat flow and heat production in the Arkoma Basin and Oklahoma Platform, southeastern Oklahoma

Young-Min Lee, David Deming, Kevin F. Chen

Subsurface temperature and thermal gradients along a north-south cross section through the Arkoma Basin and the Oklahoma Platform in southeastern Oklahoma were estimated from 345 bottom hole temperatures from 199 oil and gas wells. The average geothermal gradient in the southern part of the basin near the Ouachita Front is 20 degrees C/km, exceeds 30 degrees C/km in the middle part of the basin, and is 24 degrees C/km on the Oklahoma Platform to the north. Drill cuttings obtained from 11 oil and gas wells were used for 843 thermal conductivity measurements. Thermal conductivity data, corrected to in situ conditions, …

Thermal history of the eastern margin of the Gulf of Suez .1. Reconstruction from borehole temperature and organic maturity measurements

S. Feinstein, Barry P. Kohn, M.S. Steckler, M. Eyal

The Gulf of Suez is a Tertiary continental rift associated with prominent flank uplift. Despite numerous studies which focused mainly on the western and central parts of the graben, the thermo-mechanics controlling the tectonic evolution of the Gulf of Suez is still enigmatic. We have integrated borehole temperatures and organic maturity measurements in the eastern margin of the Gulf of Suez, in order to study rift-related paleothermometry and the present-day thermal regime. The data obtained suggest that the present thermal regime represents the maximum heat flow and temperatures for the sedimentary section in the basin. Furthermore, lateral distributions of geothermal …

Modelling of rock temperatures for deep Alpine tunnel projects

Laurent Goy, D. Fabre, G. Menard

The construction of deep railway tunnels requires the prediction of natural temperatures at depth. Geothermal data for the Alps are presented and principles of previously employed methods to predict temperatures, using Andreae's analytical approach, are discussed. We then use a finite element numerical model based on pure conduction to calculate temperatures at depth. This method allows rock heterogeneity and anisotropy to be taken into account. This model is applied to the Maurienne-Ambin tunnel project, a 55 km long tunnel between St-Jean-de-Maurienne (France) and Susa (Italy), which will be the longest tunnel for the planned TGV (high speed train) Lyon-Torino link. …

Anomalous heat flow regime in the Western margin of the North American Craton, Canada

Jacek A. Majorowicz

A large scale northern Prairies heat flow anomaly (NPHFA) extends from north-eastern British Columbia and northern Alberta to the southern Northwestern Territories between the Precambrian shield (Slave Province) and the Cordillera (Mackenzie Fold Belt). The large aerial scale of the anomaly (order of magnitude of 102 km) is of the order of magnitude of lithospheric thickness. In parts of the basin close to areas of high topographic elevation, including the Rocky Mountains and the Mackenzie Fold Belt, the magnitude of the heat flow anomaly is significantly reduced by downward cross-formational fluid flow. The position of the heat flow anomaly (NPHFA) …

Terrestrial heat flow in the Paraná Basin, southern Brazil

Suzanne J. Hurter, Henry N. Pollack

We present 56 new heat flow values from the intracratonic Parana Basin in southern Brazil. This large basin is filled with up to 5 km of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. In the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous a great igneous event capped most of the basin surface with flood basalts up to 1700 m thick. Geothermal gradients computed from 79 deep exploration boreholes range from 20 K km(-1) to 30 K km(-1) with the lower gradients generally located in the central part of the basin. Thermal conductivities were determined on 247 core samples. The harmonic mean thermal conductivity of the section …

Heat-Flow and Regional Uplift at the North-Eastern Border of the Ebro Basin, Ne Spain

J. Cabal, M. Fernandez

The north-eastern border of the Ebro foreland basin is characterized by relatively high elevation, the presence of Neogene to Present volcanism, and a high thermal gradient. These facts suggest that the area is affected not only by the topographic load of the Pyrenees but also by the opening of the Valencia trough. To examine this hypothesis, we first present the results of a surface heat-flow survey carried out in the Osona depression. After selecting those wells which are essentially affected by conductive heat transport and applying topographic and palaeoclimatic corrections, we obtain a corrected surface heat-flow density of 88 +/- …
