Thermal regime and hydrodynamics in Tunisia and Algeria

Hamed Ben Dhia

The thermal regime of Algeria and Tunisia and its relation to hydrodynamics is studied by means of available geological and geothermal, and petroleum data. Heat flow densities in the area range from 60 mWm (super -2) to 141 mWm (super -2) . Several Paleozoic to Tertiary aquifers have been identified, together with potential recharge and discharge areas. The area is a transition zone between the African and European plates. The more tectonically active northern Alpine domain does not exhibit an obvious geothermal trend, and high heat flow anomalies that occur there may be related to structure rather than hydrodynamics. The …

An overview of heat flow in southwestern United States and northern Chihuahua, Mexico

Marshall Reiter, Margaret W. Barroll, Jeffrie Minier, D. Burton Slemmons, E. R. Engdahl, Mark D. Zoback, David D. Blackwell

Over the past two decades a great many heat-flow measurements and estimates have been made in the southwestern United States and neighboring areas of northern Chihuahua, Mexico. Although these data have enhanced our understanding of the geothermal regime in the southwestern United States, many questions have developed while analyzing the data. In this chapter we present some of the conclusions that can be made from the heat-flow data in the study areas. In addition, we discuss some of the important unanswered questions concerning the geothermal regime in various geologic provinces of the southwestern United States and northern Chihuahua, Mexico. We …

Heat-Flow in Jane Basin, Northwest Weddell Sea

Lawrence A. Lawver, Bruno Della Vedova, Richard P. Von Herzen

The Jane Basin is a marginal basin situated immediately to the east of the South Orkney microcontinent in the Northwest section of the Weddell Sea. Thirty-five heat flow measurements made in the Jane Basin ranged in value from 67.5 +/- 4.3 to 92.1 +/- 3.0 m W/m2. Excluding values that were corrected for tilting or were on the very edge of the basin, the remaining 28 values range between 75.0 +/- 8.0 and 84.6 +/- 9.1 m W/m2. Magnetostratigraphy on the recovered core from Ocean Drilling Program hole 697, which was drilled in Jane Basin to a depth of 322 …

Heat-Flow and Structure of the Lithosphere in the Eastern Canadian Shield

Christophe Pinet, Claude Jaupart, Jean-Claude Mareschal, Clement Gariepy, Gerard Bienfait, Raynald Lapointe

Twenty-two new determinations of heat flow and radiogenic heat production in the Superior and Grenville provinces of the Canadian Shield are presented. The new data and previously published measurements strongly constrain the thermal structure of the eastern Canadian Shield. In the Abitibi greenstone belt, heat flow gradually increases from 29 mW m-2 near the Grenville Front to 44 mW m-2 east of the Kapuskasing uplift. This heat flow variation is interpreted in terms of crustal thickening and increased thickness of a tonalitic layer with average heat production of about 1.1-mu-W m-3. This interpretation, based on estimated heat production of major …

Heatflow density distribution in the Red Sea

Jannis Makris, Jannis Tsironidis, Helmut Richter

A new heatflow density (HFD) map of the Red Sea was compiled from 467 heatflow density values collected by various organisations during the last 20 years. The map shows that the complicated heatflow distribution can only be explained if we assume considerable convective transport of heat through water circulating in the sediments and crust, as well as convection in small volumes of mobilized magma associated with the deeps along the morphologic depression of the Red Sea. The HFD values are twice as high as the world mean at the flanks of the rift and reach values of 5 to 8 …

Heat-Flow on the Southern Colorado Plateau

Jeffrie Minier, Marshall Reiter

Heat-flow data from the study area in the southern Colorado Plateau indicate a pattern of local anomalies having relatively high heat flow superimposed on a regional, intermediate heat-flow setting. While many of the conventional heat-flow data are relatively shallow and may be perturbed by groundwater circulation, bottom-hole temperature data from two relatively deep petroleum exploration drill holes near the southern plateau periphery yield intermediate heat-flow estimates. The mean heat flow within the volcanically active Jemez zone does not appear to be significantly greater than the mean heat flow for the remainder of the study area. This is due to the …
