Geothermal studies in the Quemado area, New Mexico

J Minier, M Reiter, M Shafioullah, PE Damon

New heat-flow data and K-Ar dates from the southern periphery of the Colorado Plateau (CP) are presented. The radiometric data indicate the area around Quemado, NM was volcanically active during mid- and late-Pliocene time. The heat-flow data suggest a regional value for the area of 75–84 mW m−2, somewhat higher than the non-volcanic regions of the Plateau. The average heat flow in the Quemado area is 10–20 mW m−2 less than the heat flow in the north-western periphery of the Plateau where a transition zone between the Basin and Range Province (BRP) and the CP is present. From geophysical data …

Characteristics of geothermal field in Yunnan region

Qianfan Wu, Jiahua Zhu, Yizhen Xie, Du Wang

This paper provides 14 values of-geothermal heat flow obtaind from the geothermal measurement of 26 wells. Based on these data the characteristics of the geothermal field in Yunnan region have been described as follows: Either the distribution of geothermal heat flow, or the variation of temperature gradient displays high value in the west of Lancangjiang river, the northern segment of Honghe fault zone, as well as Kunming and Eshan region. Low value occurs to the east of Xiaojiang fault zone in eastern Yunnan, and also in the region between the Xiaojiang and Honghe fault zones, including Chuxiong, Binchuan and Xiangyun. …

Some new measurements of heat flow in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield

Malcolm J. Drury, Alan Taylor

Borehole heat-flow measurements are reported from six new sites in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield. Values adjusted for glaciation effects, but not for Holocene climatic variations, range from 42 to 56 mW/m2. When these new values are combined with 21 previously published borehole values the mean is 42 mW/m2 with a standard deviation of 11 mW/m2. The data for a site on the Lac du Bonnet batholith suggest that the batholith has a thin veneer, less than 3 km, of rock of high radiogenic heat production at the surface.
