Heat flow in Eastern Egypt: The thermal signature of a continental breakup
The Red Sea is a modern example of continental fragmentation and incipient ocean formation. Heat flow data have been collected from eastern Egypt to provide information relating to the mode and mechanism of Red Sea opening. Preliminary heat flow data, including new data reported here, are now available from twenty-five sites in eastern Egypt and one site in western Sinai. A pattern of low to normal heat flow (35–55 mW m−2) inland with high heat flow (75–100 mW m−2) in a zone within 30 to 40 km of the coast is indicated. Moderately high heat flow (around 70 mW m−2) …

The transition between the Sheba Ridge and Owen Basin: rifting of old oceanic lithosphere
Magnetic quiet zones are present along the margins of the entire length of the Gulf of Aden to the Owen fracture zone. This includes the easternmost 300 km between the eastern edges of Arabia and Africa to the Owen fracture zone where old oceanic lithosphere was rifted to form the Sheba Ridge. Within this easternmost region the boundary between the quiet zone and the old oceanic lithosphere is marked by ridge complexes, the Sharbithat Ridge Complex to the north and the Error Ridge Complex to the south. These ridge complexes, which lack a magnetic signature, occupy a structural position similar …
Variance analysis of estimates and measurements of terrestrial heat flow
A components-of-variance-analysis is applied to compare heat flow estimates with heat flow measurements. Three types of heat flow data are analysed; they are: “between depth interval within well” variances, “between well site-within region” variances and “between region” variances. “Between depth interval-within well” heat flow variances are typically greater for estimates than for measurements, implying a greater unsystematic uncertainty with the interval heat flow estimates as compared to the interval measurements. “Between well site-within region” variances of heat flow are about the same, or in some cases less, for groups of estimated data as compared with groups of measured data. Therefore …

Geothermal low-temperature reservoir assessment in northern Dona Ana County, New Mexico. Final report
Fifty-four shallow temperature gradient holes were drilled along Interstate Highway 25 and the Rio Grande, from Las Cruces to Rincon, in northern Dona Ana County, New Mexico. This shallow temperature study (a joint exploration program performed with the cooperation and financial assistance of Trans-Pacific Geothermal, Inc. of Oakland, California) resulted in the discovery and confirmation of new and suspected major low- temperature geothermal resources. Elevated temperature and heat flow data suggest a thermal anomaly which can be generally described as being a nearly continuous linear feature which extends some 25 miles in length in a northwest-southeast direction with the only …

Heat flow in southern Mexico and the thermal effects of subduction
Twenty new heat flow measurements in southern Mexico are presented. These measurements document a very broad zone of low heat flow between the coastline and the Trans-Mexico volcanic belt. At the Trans-Mexico volcanic belt, heat flow increases to high values and remains high into central Mexico. Heat flow values in the Trans-Mexico volcanic belt and northward are in excess of 80 mW m?2 (1.9 ?cal/cm2 s) and typical of values observed in the high heat flow regions of the western United States. The average heat flow in the Sierra Madre del Sur is 26 mW m?2 (0.6 ?cal/cm2 s), in …
