Heat flow studies, Coso Geothermal Area, China Lake, California. Technical report

J Combs

Heat flow studies in the Coso Geothermal Area were conducted at China Lake, California. Temperature measurements were completed in nine of the heat flow boreholes. Temperatures were measured at five meter intervals from the ground surface to the deepest five meter interval. Subsequently, temperatures were remeasured two or three times in each borehole in order to demonstrate that equilibrium thermal conditions existed. The maximum difference in temperature, at any of the five meter intervals, was 0.03 deg C. Results from these boreholes, as well as from the other seven, indicate that the temperature data above 15 meters is useless for …

Terrestrial heat flow studies in eastern Africa and the North Sea

T.R. Evans

A detailed feasibility study of the use of oil exploration, borehole temperatures and cutting samples as primary data in the computation, of heat flow forms the major part of this work. The temperature data, consists entirely of bottom hole temperatures (BHTs) measured by commercial, logging companies during breaks in drilling. Conductivity samples were, largely drill cuttings., The thermal disturbance due to drilling and the consequent nonequilibrium, state existing during temperature logging is discussed., Theoretical models and practical examples suggest that BHT derived geothermal, gradients are, on average, unlikely to be more than 10-15 percent in error, and thus are suitable …

Heat flow map, a review of heat flow data and anomalies for the European plate

Elena A. Lyubimova

Heat flow values are shown in mW/m2 on a mpa compiled using data from more than 1200 stations. The given area covers the European continental block as far as the Ural folding system, including the Caucasus, the Carpathian mountain system, the East European platform, the Scythian plate and foredeeps and also including such marginal seas as the Meditteranean, Black and Caspian seas, the Alpine lakes, a part of the Atlantic Ocean and Iceland. Heat flow values in the continental areas around the main hydrothermal manifestations of Larderello and Radicofani in Italy, Novoselovskaja in the Crimea, the Pannonian basin in Hungary, …

Combined heat flow and heat generation measurements in the Bohemian Massif

Vladimir Cermak

Six new heat flow values from western and north-western parts of the Bohemian massif are presented. Two of these heat flow measurements were combined with the determinations of heat generation due to the radioactive decay. The heat flow values fit the general geothermal pattern of Czechoslovakia (Cermák 1968), of clearly sustained low heat flow in the stable parts of the Bohemian massif and increased heat flow in Krušné Hory mountains. The linear relationship between heat flow Q and heat generation A, Q = qo + bA, revealed preliminary values of b = 3.8 km and qo = 1.05 × 10−6cal/(cm2s), …
