Literature Review

The Global Heat Flow Database (GHFDB) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of data quality. To achieve this, we have implemented a rigorous literature review process that ensures all datasets are thoroughly vetted before being made publicly available. Terrestrial heat flow in Mosabani Mine, Singhbhum District, Bihar, India

R.K. Verma, R.U.M. Rao, Mohan L. Gupta

Terrestrial heat flow has been determined in Mosabani mine (86°28?E, 22°31?N) in Singhbhum district, Bihar, India. The mine is located in a thrust zone which forms a part of the northern Precambrian shield of India. Temperature observations were taken at nine different levels from 356 to 848 meters below the surface. The least-squares gradient for temperature in the mine is 19.37±0.74 °C/km. Thermal conductivities in the vertical direction were determined for twelve representative samples of schists and five samples of soda granites, using a divided-bar apparatus. The mean values for thermal conductivity of schists in directions parallel and perpendicular to …

Terrestrial Heat Flow: Measurement in Lake Bottoms

Stanley R. Hart, John S. Steinhart

The feasibility of measuring terrestrial heat flow in lakes has been investigated in Lake Superior. The temperature gradient and thermal conductivity of the sediment were measured at each of four stations in water depths exceeding 250 meters. Consideration of the effects of climatic variations suggests that they may not seriously affect the values for heat flow obtained by this method. The values measured are in reasonable agreement with other continental values in the shield areas.
