Episodic Rifting and Subsidence in the South China Sea1

Ke Ru, John D. Pigott

The South China Sea experienced at least three stages of rifting and two intervening stages of sea-floor spreading since the Early Cretaceous. Its evolution can be described by an episodic model of tectonism, one of thermal cooling and subsidence, pulsed by temporally and spatially confined heating events. Analysis of regional geologic and geophysical data suggests episodes of rifting and associated thermal activities initiated during the Late Cretaceous, the late Eocene, and the late early Miocene. The rift system corresponding to the first episode trends northeast-southwest, whereas those of the second and third trend east-west. These two trends coincide with the …

Heat flow, heat production and fission track data from the Hercynian basement around the Provençal Basin (Western Mediterranean)

Francis Lucazeau, D. Mailhe

In the complex structural framework of the Western Mediterranean. Hercynian areas are expected to be thermally preserved from the recent tectonic evolution. The thermal regime of these areas is studied using heat flow, heat production and fission track data. The surface heat flow is significantly higher in Corsica (76 ± 10 mW m−2) than in the Maures and Estérel (58 ± 2 mW m−2). Neither heat production nor erosion subsequent to the Alpine orogeny in Corsica can explain such a difference. It is suggested that a deep thermal source related to the asymmetric evolution of the Provençal basin could explain …

Heat flow measurements in the northern and middle Ryukyu Arc area on R/V Sonne in 1984

Makoto Yamano, Seiya Uyeda, Yoshitsugu Furukawa, Gholam Ali Dehghani

Multiple penetration heat flow measurements were made using Ewing type and violin bow type instruments on the cruise of R/V SONNE in 1984. The studied areas are the Ryukyu Trench between the Kyushu-Palau Ridge and the Amami Plateau, the northernmost part of the Okinawa Trough, and the middle Okinawa Trough around 127°E. In the Ryukyu Trench area, the heat flow is 50 to 65 mW/m2 near the trench axis and it seems to be lower on the landward wall. The heat flow could not be determined in the northern Okinawa Trough, because the temperature profiles were very non-linear probably due …

Heat flow in the upper-silesian coal basin: Re-evaluation of data with special attention to the lithology

Jaroslav Kubik, Vladimir Cermak

The area of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin was characterized by generally high heat flow ranging from 60 to 120 mWm−2, mean 82±16 mWm−2, which has been difficult to explain. Therefore all published data on the heat flow in this region (n=37) were summarized and re-evaluated. Special attention was paid to the detailed assessment of the lithological structure and the contribution of the individual rock types to the characteristic in-situ thermal conductivity. Also the thermal conductivity of the coal bearing layers was estimated and its effect on the temperature-depth distribution was investigated. The application of the data obtained for the …
