RV SONNE 241 Cruise Report / Fahrtbericht, Manzanillo, 23.6.2015 – Guayaquil, 24.7.2015 : SO241 - MAKS: Magmatism induced carbon escape from marine sediments as a climate driver – Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California

SO241 set out to test the hypothesis that rift-related magmatism is able to increase carbon emissions from sedimentary basins to the extent that they can actively force climate. To this end we investigated a study area in the Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California which is one of very few geological settings where rift-related magmatism presently leads to magmatic intrusions into a sediment basin. During the cruise we collected 1100 km of 2D seismic lines to image the extent and volume of magmatic intrusions as well as the extent of metamorphic overprinting of the surrounding sediments and associated subsurface …

Heat flow in the rifted continental margin of the South China Sea near Taiwan and its tectonic implications

Wei-Zhi Liao, Andrew T. Lin, Char-Shine Liu, Jung-Nan Oung, Yunshuen Wang

Temperature measurements carried out on 9 hydrocarbon exploration boreholes together with Bottom Simulating Reflectors (BSRs) from reflection seismic images are used in this study to derive geothermal gradients and heat flows in the northern margin of the South China Sea near Taiwan. The method of Horner plot is applied to obtain true formation temperatures from measured borehole temperatures, which are disturbed by drilling processes. Sub-seafloor depths of BSRs are used to calculate sub-bottom temperatures using theoretical pressure/temperature phase boundary that marks the base of gas hydrate stability zone. Our results show that the geothermal gradients and heat flows in the …

Possible causes for the variation of geothermal gradients across the northern continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico

Cory H. Christie

A wide variation of geothermal gradients is observed along the northern continental shelf of the Gulf of Mexico. Gradients range from 0.03 to 0.06 offshore Texas, 0.015 to 0.025 off Louisiana, and 0.025 to 0.03 off Alabama. To assess the mechanism responsible for this variation, the present study first compiled an extensive bottom-hole temperature database from over 8,000 wells in the northern continental shelf, and constructed a more detailed geothermal gradient map than those published previously. Second, 1D basin models were constructed for 3 localities (offshore Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama) that show differing geothermal gradients. A basin model is a …

Heat flow survey in the vicinity of the branches of the megasplay fault in the Nankai accretionary prism

Makoto Yamano, Yoshifumi Kawada, Hideki Hamamoto

Heat flow measurements were conducted at four sites in the Nankai accretionary prism southeast of the Kii Peninsula, around the area where the megasplay fault reaches the surface, in conjunction with long-term monitoring of bottom water temperature at nearby stations. Analysis of the obtained data showed that variations in bottom water temperature seriously affect surface heat flow measurements in the areas with water depths of less than about 2,800 m. This effect can reach up to 20% to 30% and may have significantly contributed to a large scatter in the heat flow values previously measured in the study area. The …

Borehole temperature logging and temperature field in the Xiongxian geothermal field, Hebei Province 河北雄县地热田钻井地温测量及地温场特征

Based on the newly measured borehole temperature logs from 22 wells and other researchers' data, we analyze geothermal field features in Xiongxian, and find that the transfer model is mainly conductive in the cap rock, but the thermal reservoir is mainly convective due to the forced convection resulted by geothermal production and recharge. Several borehole temperature measurements show that the length of well static time and the migration patterns in well control the temperature distribution and the dynamic changes in the borehole: with more time to keep well static, the temperature data inversely changes in the neutral point. The temperature …

The values of the deep heat flow were studied in 182 boreholes. They are grouped into 104 points. The resulting densification of the network eliminates some of the “white spots” in the study of the heat flow of the south-eastern part of the DDD. A chain of positive anomalies of the heat flow exceeding 50 mW/m2 is assigned to the south-western boundary DDD fault. Near the center of the region, the highest heat flows exceed 70 mW/m2. The negative heat flow anomalies are common in the region considerably wider. Some of them tend to the activated fault zones. The analysis …

Thermal conditions of the central Sinai Microplate inferred from new surface heat-flow values and continuous borehole temperature logging in central and southern Israel

Felina Schuetz, Hans-Juergen Foerster, Andrea Foerster

This paper reports ten new surface heat-flow density (qs) values for central and southern Israel (central Sinai Microplate), whose crystalline crust and lithosphere formed as part of the Neoproterozoic Arabian-Nubian Shield. Heat flow was calculated in Mesozoic sediments using the classical approach of heat-flow determination by implementing in the analysis high-precision continuous temperature logs obtained in air- and/or water-filled boreholes. Thermal conductivity (TC) measured for a large suite of rock samples of lithotypes making up the sequence was assigned to temperature gradients in intervals for which the lithology was known. The heat-flow values obtained for different depth intervals in a …

Quantitative estimate of heat flow from a mid-ocean ridge axial valley, Raven field, Juan de Fuca Ridge: Observations and inferences

Marie S. Salmi, Paul H. Johnson, Maurice A. Tivey, Michael Hutnak

Abstract A systematic heat flow survey using thermal blankets within the Endeavour segment of the Juan de Fuca Ridge axial valley provides quantitative estimates of the magnitude and distribution of conductive heat flow at a mid-ocean ridge, with the goal of testing current models of hydrothermal circulation present within newly formed oceanic crust. Thermal blankets were deployed covering an area of 700 by 450 m in the Raven Hydrothermal vent field area located 400 m north of the Main Endeavour hydrothermal field. A total of 176 successful blanket deployment sites measured heat flow values that ranged from 0 to 31?W?m?2. …
