Thermal regime and evolution of the Congo basin as an intracratonic basin
New heat flow determination in northern Tarim Craton, northwest China
Tarim Craton is a Precambrian block situated in northwest China, just north of the Tibetan Plateau, where a large sedimentary basin with abundant hydrocarbon potential has developed. Accurate heat flow data for Tarim is vital for understanding the lithospheric evolution and hydrocarbon generation in this area; however, there were unavailable until now, due to a lack of high quality steady-state temperature logging data. Here, we report 10 new heat flow values derived from steady-state temperature logging and measured thermal conductivity data. New heat flow values range from 40.1 to 49.4 mW m(-2), with a mean of 43.1 +/- 3.0 mW …
High-resolution borehole temperature loggings and heat flow determination from the crystalline basement of the North China Craton
New heat flow data from three boreholes near Bergen, Stavanger and Moss, southern Norway
New heat flow data have recently been obtained for three boreholes, Fyllingsdalen, Ullrigg and Arvollskogen, which are located in southern Norway near Bergen, Stavanger and Moss, respectively. The obtained topographically and palaeoclimatically corrected values of average heat flow density are 51 mW/m(2) within the Ullrigg borehole, 72 mW/m(2) within the Fyllingsdalen borehole and 80 mW/m(2) within the Arvollskogen borehole, in the depth interval of 120-400 m. According to the preferred palaeoclimatic scenario, the highest tentative palaeoclimatic corrections vary from 21 to 26 mW/m(2) within the shallow parts of the investigated boreholes. Therefore, a significant decrease of the Earth's surface temperatures …
Distribution of terrestrial heat flow and structural control in Huainan-Huaibei Coalfield 两淮煤田大地热流分布及其构造控制
The terrestrial heat flow value is an important parameter to characterize the geothermal field in a region precisely. For the Huainan-Huaibei coalfield, the data of geothermal distribution, thermo-physical tests of rock and the distribution of terrestrial heat flow remain very little. To solve this problem, we use reliable well-logging data of temperature to delineate the distribution characteristics of terrestrial heat flow and analyze the influence of geological structure on current distribution of heat flow in this area. The determination of heat flow values depends on reliable well-logging data and test results of thermal conductivity of rock. Data from 159 boreholes for …

Heat-flow regimes and the hydrate stability zone of a transient, thermogenic, fault-controlled hydrate system (Woolsey Mound northern Gulf of Mexico)
This study aims to constrain the base of the hydrates stability field in structurally complexsites using the case of Woolsey Mound, a fault-controlled, transient, thermogenic hydrates system, in Mississippi Canyon Block 118, northern Gulf of Mexico. We have computed the base of the hydrates stability field integrating results from a recent heat-flow survey, designed to investigate geothermal anomalies along fault zones which exhibit different fluid flux regimes. An advanced “compositional” simulator was used to model hydrate formation and dissociation at Woolsey Mound and addresses the following hypotheses:1.Migrating thermogenic fluids alter thermal conditions of the Hydrate Stability Zone (HSZ), so heat-flow …

Expedition 346 summary
Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Expedition 346 (29 July–27 September 2013) drilled seven sites covering a wide latitudinal range in the body of water bordered by the Eurasian continent, the Korean Peninsula, and the Japanese Islands, as well as two closely spaced sites in the East China Sea. This expedition recovered 6135.3 m of core with an average recovery of 101%—a record amount of core recovered during any single IODP expedition. Expedition 346 was the first scientific drilling expedition ever to focus exclusively on the climate system in this region, which is at once so critical yet potentially vulnerable to …
Assessment of Geothermal Resources of Brazil
Results of recent geothermal surveys carried out in the states of Tocantins, Pará and Mato Grosso have contributed to updated assessment of geothermal resources of Brazil. It is now based on results obtained at over 1100 sites and hydrothermal and energy use data on thermal fluid discharge systems at over 110 localities. The total resource base, referred to the accessible depth limit of 3km, is estimated at 1800 TJ. This is nearly 25% less than previous calculations, as it allows for estimated cooling effects of regional scale groundwater circulation in deep sedimentary strata. A significant low temperature geothermal anomaly has …
