Heat flow anomaly in some western Pacific trench-arc-backarc systems associated with interstitial water circulation
A detailed study of heat flow at the Fifth Water Site, Utah, in the Basin and Range-Colorado Plateaus transition
A detailed heat flow study has been conducted at a site in the southern Wasatch Mountains, Utah, in the thermal transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range tectonic provinces of the western U.S.A. Two wells, 600 m deep and only 400 m apart, in rugged terrain provided constraints on topographic and microclimatic effects and helped demonstrate the efficacy but also some inadequacies of commonly used heat flow corrections. Microclimatic effects changed the subsurface thermal gradients by up to 6%; atmospheric temperature lapse, insolation and vegetation all contribute about equally to the subsurface effects. The topographic disturbance decreased gradients …
Rates of fluid expulsion across the Northern Cascadia Accretionary Prism: Constraints from new heat row and multichannel seismic reflection data
Terrestrial Heat-Flow in East and Southern Africa
We report 26 new heat flow and 13 radiogenic heat production measurements from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania, together with details and some revisions of 18 previous heat flow measurements by other investigators from Kenya and Tanzania. These measurements come from Archean cratons, Proterozoic mobile belts, and Mesozoic and Cenozoic rifts. Heat flow data from eight new sites in the Archean Zimbabwe Craton are consistent with previous measurements in the Archean Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe Craton and Limpopo Belt (Kalahari Craton) and do not change the mean heat flow of 47±2 mW m?2 (standard error of the mean) in the Kalahari Craton based on …

Heat flow through the sea bottom around the Yucatan Peninsula
Heat flow studies were conducted in January–February 1987, off the Atlantic Coast of Mexico on board the R/V Akademik Nikolai Strakhov. Two areas were surveyed, one transecting the Salt Dome Province and the Campeche Canyon, in the Gulf of Mexico, and the other, on the eastern flank of the Yucatan Peninsula. Conductive heat flow through the bottom sediments was determined as the product of vertical temperature gradient and in situ thermal conductivity, measured with a thermal probe using a multithermistor array and real-time processing capabilities. Forward two-dimensional modeling allows us to estimate heat flow variations at both sites from local …
Analysis of the Socorro hydrogeothermal system: central New Mexico
Analysis of new geothermal subsurface hydrogeologic data from the Socorro area provides new insight into both the geothermal regime and groundwater flow system. Geothermal data from the Socorro area, originally obtained by industry investigators, further delineate a known geothermal high in the Socorro mountain block and reveal a profound geothermal low west of the mountain block in La Jencia Basin. Anomalously low heat flows in La Jencia Basin suggest hydrologic downflow, but hydrologic and geothermal evidence indicates that no infiltration of surface recharge occurs in this area. We conclude that eastward flowing groundwater is forced to flow down beneath a …
