Heat flow through the sea bottom around the Yucatan Peninsula

M.D. Khutorskoy, R. Fernandez, V.I. Kononov, B.G. Polyak, V.G. Matveev, A.A. Rot

Heat flow studies were conducted in January–February 1987, off the Atlantic Coast of Mexico on board the R/V Akademik Nikolai Strakhov. Two areas were surveyed, one transecting the Salt Dome Province and the Campeche Canyon, in the Gulf of Mexico, and the other, on the eastern flank of the Yucatan Peninsula. Conductive heat flow through the bottom sediments was determined as the product of vertical temperature gradient and in situ thermal conductivity, measured with a thermal probe using a multithermistor array and real-time processing capabilities. Forward two-dimensional modeling allows us to estimate heat flow variations at both sites from local …

Geophysical and petrological evidence for the presence of an “anomalous” upper mantle beneath the Sahara basins (Algeria)

A. Lesquer, D. Takherist, J. M. Dautria, O. Hadiouche

North of 20°N, the northwest part of the stable African shield is characterized by an anomalous high heat flow zone (80–110 mW m−2). This east-west elongated zone is oblique to major Proterozoic structural units and cannot be related to differences in crustal heat production. Maximum heat flow occurs in the southern part of the Sahara basins (100–120 mW m−2). Only a mantle heat flow contribution of 60–70 mW m−2 can account for this very high surface heat flow. The estimated geotherms suggest that the temperature of upper mantle is anomalously high and partial melting may be present at shallow depths. …

Terrestrial Heat-Flow in East and Southern Africa

Andrew A. Nyblade, Henry N. Pollack, D.L. Jones, F. Podmore, M. Mushayandebvu

We report 26 new heat flow and 13 radiogenic heat production measurements from Zimbabwe, Zambia and Tanzania, together with details and some revisions of 18 previous heat flow measurements by other investigators from Kenya and Tanzania. These measurements come from Archean cratons, Proterozoic mobile belts, and Mesozoic and Cenozoic rifts. Heat flow data from eight new sites in the Archean Zimbabwe Craton are consistent with previous measurements in the Archean Kaapvaal-Zimbabwe Craton and Limpopo Belt (Kalahari Craton) and do not change the mean heat flow of 47±2 mW m?2 (standard error of the mean) in the Kalahari Craton based on …

A detailed study of heat flow at the Fifth Water Site, Utah, in the Basin and Range-Colorado Plateaus transition

William G. Powell, David S. Chapman

A detailed heat flow study has been conducted at a site in the southern Wasatch Mountains, Utah, in the thermal transition between the Colorado Plateau and Basin and Range tectonic provinces of the western U.S.A. Two wells, 600 m deep and only 400 m apart, in rugged terrain provided constraints on topographic and microclimatic effects and helped demonstrate the efficacy but also some inadequacies of commonly used heat flow corrections. Microclimatic effects changed the subsurface thermal gradients by up to 6%; atmospheric temperature lapse, insolation and vegetation all contribute about equally to the subsurface effects. The topographic disturbance decreased gradients …

Geothermal measurements in a deep well at Regina, Saskatchewan

Alan M. Jessop, L.W. Vigrass

The University of Regina Geothermal Project was designed to demonstrate the use of moderate-temperature geothermal resources from sedimentary aquifers in heating large buildings. The first well was drilled on the campus of the University of Regina in the winter of 1979. Hydraulic potentials show that individual aquifers of the Basal Clastic Unit are not in direct hydraulic connection, and temperature measurements show that flow is occurring in the open hole. Apparent terrestrial heat flow varies vertically in the Upper Clastic Unit, showing either cross-formational water flow or errors in the measurement of thermal conductivity of shales. A reasonably uniform heat …
