Terrestrial heat flow in the Brazilian highlands

Icaro Vitorello, Valiya M. Hamza, Henry N. Pollack

We report heat flow measurements from 84 boreholes and one underground mine at 19 widely spaced sites in eastern and central parts of Brazil. Three sites in the stable S?o Francisco Craton comprising rocks with Transamazonic ages (2600?1800 Ma) or older present an average heat flow of 42±5 (sem(standard error of the mean)) mW m?2, eight sites located in the Late Precambrian Braziliane metamorphic belt have an average heat flow of 55±4 (sem) m W m?2, and three sites in the Paraná basin, locus of Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous basaltic volcanicity, have a mean heat flow of 68±6 (sem) mW m?2. …

Heat flow of the western Snake River Plain

Roger N. Smith

A detailed heat-flow contour map of the western Snake River Plain was produced from 65 temperature gradients measured in this region. Thermal conductivities of 247 samples, selected from well cuttings, drill cores, and rock outcrops, were determined to calculate heat-flow values. In addition, 60 previously-measured temperature gradients and 85 previously determined thermal conductivities from surrounding areas and from within the area were used to determine whether internal consistencies or regional correlations in the heat-flow data occur. Measurement locations were relatively evenly dispersed, averaging one per 43 square kilometers.

Heat flow through the floor of the Scotia, far South Atlantic and Weddell Seas

V. Zlotnicki, John G. Sclater, I.O. Norton, Richard P. Von Herzen

We discuss the first heat flow measurements taken in the Atlantic section of the Antarctic Ocean. The one value from the Scotia Sea is compatible with the youthful age proposed for this sea. The values around the America-Antarctica ridge are low and scattered as expected from regions of rough topography and variable sediment cover. The values from the well sedimented western Weddell Sea are surprisingly high for a deep, isostatically adjusted sedimentary basin, and decrease to the Southeast. Such high heat flow could result from a marginal basin type origin or be related to a large difference in age across …
