Heat flow and heat transfer conditions in the bottom sediments of the equatorial indian ocean

R.I. Kutas, M.I. Bevzyuk, V.F. Vygovsky

The results are reported of heat flow determinations during the 10th and 11th cruises of the “Akademik Vernadsky”. Geothermal gradients were measured by the thermograd PTG-2MTB, with two temperature sensors of 1 or 1.2 m spacing. The temperature sensors were fixed to the coring tube. The lower sensor penetrated the sediment to a depth of 2.5 m. On board determinations of thermal conductivity were made by one of two methods: the needle probe method and analysis of water content in sediments. 21 heat flow measurements ranging from 4 to 120 mWm−2 have been obtained. The heat flow values depend on …

Draft of a geothermal flux map of France

Robert Gable

Since only a limited number of flux (=heat flow) measurements are available, it was necessary to plot a geothermal flux map of France on the basis of the method whose principle is presented below. In order to calculate flux, it is necessary to know the thermal gradient and conductivity of the rock. The gradient can be determined with relative precision on the basis of temperatures measured in oil wells, particularly during formation testing or bottom hole testing, but for the latter a correction is necessary. The first type of measurements was used whenever possible. The thermal conductivities used for calculation …

Review of Heat Flow Measurements in Czechoslovakia

Vladimir Cermak

All available heat flow data from the territory of Czechoslovakia are reviewed and analyzed. The technique of determining heat flow is briefly discussed. The surface pattern of the geothermal activity is presented in the form of a heat flow map, which shows that heat flow results are well correlated with major geological features. This map was completed with the data on deep seismic sounding and several characteristic temperature-depth profiles were constructed demonstrating the principal difference in the crustal structure between the Variscan and the Alpine tectonic units. On a regional scale, a generally negative correlation between heat flow and crustal …

This article describes the methods and instruments for observing the terrestrial heat flow, including the semiconductor thermistor well temperature gauge for measuring temperature in the borehole and the device for measuring the thermal conductivity of core specimens indoors. The recent years in North China 11 The temperature and thermal conductivity data obtained from 16 boreholes in three locations and the results of calculating the heat flow value. The relationship between the heat flow value distribution and the complex geological conditions in the area, such as the heat flow value of northern and eastern China and the world A possible explanation …

A heat flow survey at anomaly 13 on the Reykjanes Ridge: A critical test of the relation between heat flow and age

John G. Sclater, John Crowe

We obtained 17 successful 12.5 m heat flow measurements on Anomaly 13 east of the Reykjanes Ridge. All temperature gradients were linear below 7.5 m but showed a large increase toward the sediment surface in the upper 5m. From the linear gradients and thermal conductivities measured on the sediment recovered in the cores we computed a mean flow for Anomaly 13 (35 m.y. B.P.) of 1.98±0.24 ?cal/cm2 s (82.9±10.1 mW/m2). Thirteen of the stations were taken in a detailed survey of a well-sedimented area at 56°N, 29°30?W. These measurements have a mean of 2.01±0.25 ?cal/cm2 s (84.2±10.5 mW/m2). Almost all …

Terrestrial heat flow in eastern Arizona: A first report

Marshall Reiter, Charles Shearer

Fifteen heat-flow measurements are presented for eastern Arizona and neighboring areas. In the Gila Mountains of southeastern Arizona a heat flow of 1.9 HFU (the approximate average for the Basin and Range Province) is estimated from the best measurements. In the eastern part of the Saffobrd Valley, just south of the Gila Mountains, subsurface temperature gradients were measured at one site to 1050 m. Heat-flow data from this site, considered with the reported hydrogeology and hot spring activity of the valley fill deposits, suggest complex hydrothermal phenomena in the valley. Several hundred km to the north, high heat flows (≥2.5 …
