Modelling of rock temperatures for deep Alpine tunnel projects
The construction of deep railway tunnels requires the prediction of natural temperatures at depth. Geothermal data for the Alps are presented and principles of previously employed methods to predict temperatures, using Andreae's analytical approach, are discussed. We then use a finite element numerical model based on pure conduction to calculate temperatures at depth. This method allows rock heterogeneity and anisotropy to be taken into account. This model is applied to the Maurienne-Ambin tunnel project, a 55 km long tunnel between St-Jean-de-Maurienne (France) and Susa (Italy), which will be the longest tunnel for the planned TGV (high speed train) Lyon-Torino link. …
High heat flow in the trans-Hudson Orogen, Central Canadian Shield
Nine new heat flow and heat production measurements are presented for the Trans-Hudson Orogen, an Early Proterozoic Province between the Archean Superior and Hearne Provinces of the Canadian Shield. Seventeen heat flow values now available in this region range between 23 and 81 mW.m−2. The highest value is anomalous and is due to heat refraction effects in and around highly conducting quartzite formations. When refraction effects are accounted for, the Flin Flon and Thompson belts appear as distinct crustal blocks with different mean heat flow values of 42±3(s.d.) mW.m−2 and 54±8(s.d.) mW.m−2. Une méthode numérique de prévision des températures a été développée à cet effet, à partir d'un logiciel 2D d'éléments finis. Les températures sont calculées dans un plan vertical du massif, à partir de l'équation fondamentale de la chaleur en conduction pure. Heat flow and heat production in the Arkoma Basin and Oklahoma Platform, southeastern Oklahoma
Subsurface temperature and thermal gradients along a north-south cross section through the Arkoma Basin and the Oklahoma Platform in southeastern Oklahoma were estimated from 345 bottom hole temperatures from 199 oil and gas wells. The average geothermal gradient in the southern part of the basin near the Ouachita Front is 20 degrees C/km, exceeds 30 degrees C/km in the middle part of the basin, and is 24 degrees C/km on the Oklahoma Platform to the north. Heat flow in the Alboran Sea, western Mediterranean
The results of the first regional heat flow survey carried out in the Alboran Basin are presented. The survey consists of 98 heat flow measurements obtained using a violin type probe, 697 nautic miles of gravity profiles, 1446 nautic miles of bathymetric survey, and 22 gravity cores. A remarkable difference in heat flow patterns exists between the western (WAB) and eastern (EAB) parts of the Alboran Basin. The Geothermal Study of the Mid-Segment of the Tancheng-Lujiang Fault Zone and Its Neighboring Region
In the paper, there are 25 new terrestrial heat flows of the mid-segment of the TanchengLujiang fault zone to be listed. With these geothermal data and other 37 terrestrial heat flows (published), we describe the distribution features of terrestrial heat flows in the area. In this research, we inferred the two-dimension temperature structure from surface to lithospheric bottom of the Huaibei-Sixian-Jinhu profile with the finite-element method and calculated the boundary temperature and heat flow of sedimentary, granite and basalt.
Terrestrial heat flow in the Sirt Basin, Libya, and the pattern of heat flow across northern Africa
We report 66 new heat flow and 24 new heat production measurements from the Sirt Basin, a late Jurassic-Miocene sedimentary depression in north central Libya underlain by late Proterozoic basement. Heat flow determinations were made using bottom hole temperatures from oil wells and thermal conductivity measurements from drill core and cuttings; heat production measurements come from core samples of basement rock. Thermal analysis of the southern Powder River Basin, Wyoming
Temperature and geologic data from over 3000 oil and gas wells within a 180 km × 30 km area that transect across the southern Powder River Basin in Wyoming, U.S.A., were used to determine the present thermal regime of the basin. Three-dimensional temperature fields within the transect, based on corrected bottomhole temperatures (BHTs) and other geologic information, were assessed using: (1) A laterally constant temperature gradient model in conjunction with an L1 norm inversion method, and (2) a laterally variable temperature gradient model in conjunction with a stochastic inversion technique. The results of geothermal investigations carried out in South America have been compiled with the purpose of preparing regional maps of terrestrial heat flow. The compilation revealed that 655 heat flow values had been determined, giving an overall data density of 37106 km2 and a representative mean heat flow of 63+-36 mW/m2. The quality of the data set is variable, depending on the nature of the primary geothermal data, and the geographic distribution of the data set is also non-uniform. Temperature and the Seismic/Aseismic Transition: Observations from the 1992 Landers Earthquake
An important constraint on the size and destructive potential of earthquakes is the depth extent of rupture. Laboratory studies of the transition from unstable to stable sliding, along with observed relationships between surface heat flow and the thickness of the seismogenic crust, provide strong evidence for the significance of temperature in determining the maximum nucleation depth of large earthquakes. The June 28, 1992, Mw 7.3 Landers earthquake ruptured fault segments within 20 km of 11 pre-existing heat flow measurements, and shallowing of the base of aftershock seismicity along strike correlates with an increase in heat flow.
