Heat flow near Orlando, Florida and Uvalde, Texas determined from well cuttings

Warren King, Gene Simmons

Heat flow has been determined in a borehole near Orlando. Florida and another near Uvalde, Texas. Thermal conductivities in both boreholes were obtained by divided-bar measurements on rock discs and by needle-probe measurements on rock chips. For the needle-probe method, the rock chips were pulverized into powder, saturated with water, and the conductivity of the solid rock was obtained from the conductivity of the mixture by an empirical relationship. Divided-bar measurements for the Florida borehole indicate a heat flow of 0.92 = .03 H.F.U., while needle-probe measurements on rock chips show a heat flow of 1.24 = .06 H.F.U. The …

Geothermal Data from the Granduc Area, Northern Coast Mountains of British Columbia

W.H. Mathews

Temperature measurements have been obtained from 80 points along the Granduc haulage tunnel, at depths of as much as 1.5?km below the surface. These fit, within 1 °C, a simplified model assuming, among other things, uniform thermal conductivity of the rocks and a temperature at rock?glacier contacts of 0 °C. For these assumptions a generalized thermal gradient (with effects of topographic irregularity removed) is about 26?mK?m?1 (26 °C/km). With the thermal conductivity of a suite of rocks from the tunnel averaging 2.72?±?12?W?m?1K?1 (6.50?±.28?cal/cm?s °C) present heat flow of about 73?mW?m?2 (1.74??cal/cm2?s) can be derived.

Heat flow in the southwestern Pacific

John G. Sclater, Uta G. Ritter, Fred S. Dixon

One hundred and fifty-eight new heat-flow measurements in and around the marginal basins of the western Pacific are presented. Most of the measurements were collected in the Melanesian area and show that the region of high heat flow and shallow crustal elevation landward of the island arcs in the western Pacific includes the Fiji plateau and Lau basin. The high heat flow and shallow crustal depth of these two provinces can be accounted for by the recent intrusion of magma by a process similar to that at midocean ridges. The mean heat flow of the south Fiji basin, the Tasman …

Heat flow through the bottom of the inner seas and lakes in the USSR

A.L. Alexandrov, Elena A. Lyubimova, G.A. Tomara

Analysis of heat flow measurements on the sea bottom and in deep water areas inside the USSR has made it possible to correlate the regional thermal anomalies with different tectonic structures. A high heat flow was observed in the Baikal Lake rift zone, reaching 1.8 – 3.0 HFU. Many measurements performed in the Black Sea have shown a heat flow which is close to the average terrestrial value. The development of new equipment and methods allowed geophysical investigations to be conducted from a drifting iceberg over the many ridges and abyssal plains of the Arctic Ocean. The heat field over …
