Implications of Heat Flow and Bottom Water Temperature in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific
The distribution of terrestrial heat flow through the sea floor of the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean is compared to recent tectonic interpretations of this complex region. Some 500 values between 25° N to 20° S latitude, including 146 newly reported here, show that the theoretical distribution of heat flow for sea-floor spreading models matches well with smoothed data over portions of the Pacific, Cocos and Nasca lithospheric plates created within about the past 18 My from the East Pacific Rise. For the Galapagos Rift Zone, the fit is reasonable for lithosphere formed within the last 5 My only if a …

Two heat flow profiles across the Atlantic Ocean
Measurements of the terrestrial heat flux at 76 localities along 2 profiles across the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at 19.5°N and 8.5°S latitude are presented. Two high heat-flow values were measured 800 to 1000 km east of the ridge crest at 8.5°S, but no high values were found at the ridge crest at this latitude. Detailed surveys and heat-flow measurements near the ridge crests on both profiles indicate that bottom topography influences the heat-flow variability. The average heat flow on both profiles, about 1.4 to 1.5 × 10−6 cal/cm2 sec, is close to the average for other ocean basins, in contrast to …

Heat flow and surface radioactivity at two sites in South Greenland
Heat flow and surface radioactivity were determined at two sites in the Precambrian shield of south Greenland. At Ivigtut heat flow q from two holes in Ketilidian (?1700?1500 m.y.) gneisses averaged 1.0 ± 0.1 HFU (?cal cm?2 sec?1), and the radiogenic heat production A0 averaged 5.5 ± 1.5 HGU (10?13 cal cm?3 sec?1). These data are consistent with other pairs of q and A0 values from the Canadian and Australian shields. In four holes near the northwestern edge of the Ilímaussaq alkali intrusion of Gardar (?1000 m.y.) age, however, q averages only 0.9 ± 0.1 HFU, whereas A0 averages >20 …
