Shallow Water Heat Flow Measurements in Bras D'or Lake, Nova Scotia

Douglas S. Rankin, Roy D. Hyndman

A light-weight oceanic thermal gradient probe was used for heat flow studies in Bras d'Or Lake, Nova Scotia. The measurements were made in St. Andrew's Channel, an elongated trough 270 m deep and 540 m wide. The heat flux of 1.50 μcal/cm2 s (63 mW/m2) is corrected for sedimentation, conductivity contrast, topography, and surface temperature differences.

Heat flow, heat generation and crustal temperatures in the Kapuskasing area of the Canadian shield

Vladimir Cermak, Alan M. Jessop

Combined heat flow and heat production measurements in three boreholes in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield were made to test the geothermal consequences of the Kapuskasing fault zone. The evidence of gravity and geomagnetic investigation suggests that this zone is a deeply eroded remnant of a crustal rift. A linear relation between heat flow (q) and surface heat production (P), q = qo + bP, where qo and b are empirical constants, has been found by F. Birch, R. Roy and A. Lachenbruch for different heat-flow provinces over the North American continent. The results from the Kapuskasing zone …

Uniform heat flow in a deep hole in the Canadian Shield and its paleoclimatic implications

John H. Sass, Arthur H. Lachenbruch, Alan M. Jessop

Precise temperature measurements to 2865 meters in a hole in a granitic pluton near FHn Flon, Manitoba, Canada, showed a systematic increase of temperature gradient with depth. Conductivity determinations at 50-meter intervals revealed a corresponding systematic decrease in conductivity. Over the entire measured depth, no systematic deviation from the mean heat flow of 1.01±0.04 ?cal/cm2 sec is detectable in spite of strong evidence that the ground-surface temperature was at least 3.5°C cooler than at present for long periods during the Pleistocene epoch. These results can be reconciled with plausible paleoclimatic models. Evidently climatic change at this site does not result …
